Why do we need a month committed to Bullying Prevention?

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and we’re inviting you to take action

The sad reality is that bullying continues to affect individuals across all age groups, especially children and teens.

October is National Bullying Awareness Month, providing us all an opportunity to pause as we increase our awareness, take action locally, and work together to foster safe, kind, and supportive communities for all.

Bullying isn’t limited to our youth, and it can happen anywhere. Bullying takes place in various settings, including:
Schools: Classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, buses, and after-school activities are common places where bullying occurs among students.

  • Online (Cyberbullying): Social media platforms, messaging apps, forums, and gaming communities provide spaces where bullying can happen digitally, often anonymously.
  • Workplaces: Bullying can happen among colleagues or even from supervisors, manifesting as harassment, exclusion, or verbal abuse.
  • Homes: Sibling bullying or bullying from relatives can occur within families, contributing to ongoing emotional stress.
  • Public Spaces: Parks, malls, and other community areas can be settings where bullying or harassment takes place, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
  • Sports Teams or Clubs: Bullying can happen within group activities, such as athletics, where team dynamics or competition might foster negative behavior.

Bullying can take place anywhere whether through physical contact, hostile comments, discrimination, and other forms of intimidation.

Bullying is NEVER deserved and should NEVER be tolerated.

Bullying has long-term consequences

Bullying in any form, may impact an individual’s emotional, mental, and even physical well-being. It often has devastating long-term consequences such as anxiety, depression, and lowered self-esteem, and can even lead to self-harm and suicide.

National Bullying Prevention Month serves as a crucial reminder of the collective responsibility to foster kindness, acceptance, and inclusion while empowering those affected by bullying.

It’s an opportunity for schools, workplaces, communities, and individuals to raise awareness, advocate for change, and build environments where everyone feels safe.

“Together we can do so much.”
Helen Keller

Three Actions You Can Take to Prevent Bullying This Month

  1. Educate and Advocate: Learn the signs of bullying and how to address it. Share resources within your community, including how to support those affected and how to report bullying incidents.
  2. Model Positive Behavior: Whether in person or online, strive to create environments rooted in kindness and respect. Stand up for others when you see bullying happening and encourage positive conversations.
  3. Support Anti-Bullying Efforts: Get involved in local or national campaigns, volunteer with organizations working on bullying prevention, or donate to causes that aim to create safer spaces for everyone.

“What you do makes a difference. You have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”
– Jane Goodall

The antidote to bullying is kindness.
